Update: Level 3 water restrictions have been lifted for Bay View

A leak was found in the Bay View water pipeline. The leak is in the pipe that crosses the Ahuriri Estuary. This makes it challenging to repair.

We have assessed the water quality in the Bay View area and there is no indication of contamination. Until the leak is fixed, we need to limit the amount of water Bay View is using and so Level 3 water restrictions have been put in place for Bay View. This means there is a sprinkler ban. Hand-held hoses can be used on alternate days between 6am-8am and 5pm-7pm only.

Water works we had planned in Westshore have been put on hold while we focus on fixing the leak. We have also stopped irrigation in parks and reserves in the area to help limit water use.

Parts required to cap the pipe have now arrived in Hawke’s Bay, so we can use CCTV to investigate the pipe. There are options for how best to fix it and we are considering which is best in terms of time, cost and complexity.

We are communicating regularly with Hawke’s Bay Regional Council, Department of Conservation, Mana Ahuriri Trust, Fire and Emergency NZ and the Estuary Protection Society.
