Clean up of fat spill in Estuary

Published: 13 January 2015

Last Updated: 3 May 2017

The clean up of an accidental spill of tallow in the Pandora industrial area of Napier yesterday afternoon will be largely completed today (13th January 2015).

The spill from a road tanker emptied tallow into stormwater and the Thames and Tyne St drains which flow into Ahuriri Estuary.

The tallow has been mostly captured in the drains and is being removed,  and fat residues around the estuary are also being cleared.

A team from Hawke’s Bay Regional Council, Napier City Council and Hawke’s Bay District Health Board is involved in the pollution spill response.

The HBDHB has confirmed that the tallow was heat treated and is not considered a health risk. HBRC has assessed that environmental impact is expected to be minor.

For more information please contact the Hawke's Bay Regional Council, phone: 06-835 9200.
