Background
At the end of 2021, Director-General of Health Dr Ashley Bloomfield issued a directive to local councils to prepare for fluoride to be added to the drinking water supply in their area. Of those 14 have now been told they must fluoridate their supply. Napier is NOT one of those areas.
Position
Napier City Council does NOT have any intentions to add fluoride to its water supply. We do not have the mechanisms in place required to add fluoride and we have not been mandated by central government or the Director-General of Health to do so.
In 2021 we were advised by government to prepare for fluoride and we have built capacity for it into design of new systems but we are not planning or budgeting for its installation.
Napier’s focus is on treatment of water to ensure it is safe, clean and reliable.
