Future talent starts with cadets

Quick with maths? Eager to learn on the job? Keen to grow with Napier? Napier City Council has two positions for engineering cadets open to those who tick the boxes. Ambitious works programmes and urban growth across New Zealand mean a shortage of engineers. What better way to prepare for the future than by investing in the talent that will help make it a successful one?

Napier’s Engineering Cadetship Programme sees cadets through a diploma in engineering while at the same time giving them a number of years of experience in the field. Applications are now open with two positions available.

Anne Stanley who heads up the cadet programme would love to see the places filled by locals.

“We are looking for local school leavers, recent school leavers or those who would like to retrain,” explains Anne. “We would like to take on locals, those with a tie to Napier and an invested interest in its future.”

With a nationwide shortage of school leavers going into engineering, Napier City Council sees the cadetships as a way to combat the talent shortage in the field.

Successful cadets will rotate around various council teams, including design, roading, waters, parks and reserves, project management. On-the-job training will give them practical experience in civil engineering, as well as proving opportunities to gain skills required to complete their qualification.

Cadetships are currently open and listed on the Napier City Council website, napier.govt.nz
