Oil discharge has been found by Council officers this morning entering Te Whanganui-a-Orotū (Ahuriri Estuary) via the Old Tūtaekurī Riverbed at the Westshore Tidal Gates.
Working in collaboration with Hawke’s Bay Regional Council, seven officers from both Councils have today tracked the discharge up underground piped networks and have found the source at an industrial site.
Installation of oil-sorbent booms and vacuuming of the oil from the waterway has taken place and the discharge has been stopped at the source. Close to a kilometer of pipe will require flushing and vacuuming of its contents.
This is a developing situation and a thorough investigation is now underway. Napier City Council and Hawke’s Bay Regional Council are continuing to work hard together to reduce the environmental impact from this event at this time. The occupiers of the subject site are cooperating with investigations.
