No more cardboard collection in Napier shopping areas

Cardboard Collection April 2020 1

From Friday 1 May 2020, the free cardboard collection service in Napier shopping areas will stop.

Over the last seven years, businesses in the CBD and other shopping areas have benefited from a free cardboard collection service. Due to changes in the recycling market, the value of paper and cardboard has reduced from around $70 per tonne to $0 per tonne. This has created an unsustainable cost to our collection contractor, which has meant that this service will cease from Friday 1 May 2020.

If you are an affected business, you have three options:

  1. Arrange for a commercial contractor to collect your cardboard
  2. Take cardboard for recycling to the Redclyffe Transfer Station on Springfield Road
  3. Take cardboard for recycling to Waste Management Recycling, 52 Austin Street, Onekawa

During public consultation of the joint Napier City and Hastings District Council’s Waste Management and Minimisation Plan in 2018, it was agreed that diverting waste from landfill was an important step to improve waste practices in Hawke’s Bay.  Submissions also supported individuals to take an increased responsibility for the waste produced by their activities.

We do encourage businesses to recycle their cardboard waste. We are very fortunate in Hawke’s Bay to have a company that uses cardboard and makes products that are used by the local horticulture industry.

If you have any questions please contact our Waste Minimisation team by email or phone 06 835 7579.
