Taradale Library

The Taradale Library, 10 years on from its refurbishment.

An eclectic programme of free events is planned to mark Taradale Library's 10th anniversary.

Taradale Library is the place to be this Saturday 28 September, as a series of free events are held to mark the 10 years since the popular community facility had its last major refurbishment.

Every day the library welcomes more than 500 visitors. Napier has had a public library service since 1865, and while it may be stretching it a bit to say we all love our libraries here in Hawke’s Bay, current membership is about 34,000, out of a population of about 64,000. Approximately 6,000 of those members live outside the city boundaries.

“We want to give the community a taster of some of our great programmes and services that are free to people of all ages. Libraries in the 21st century are so much more than a collection of books for people to borrow,” says Vanessa Langman, Customer Services Lead, Napier Libraries.

During consultation for the Library Strategy last year it became clear that many people did not know what the Napier and Taradale libraries offered, besides issuing and returning books. So the strategy, adopted by Council in December last year, included setting out how the libraries could better share what they offered with the community.

Napier Libraries' Vanessa Langman: “We want to give the community a taster of some of our great programmes and services that are free to people of all ages. Libraries in the 21st century are so much more than a collection of books for people to borrow.”

This significant date on the facility’s calendar presents a great opportunity to do just that, says Ms Langman.

“We continue to look at ways we can develop our services to match community needs, while maintaining a welcoming environment for our regulars, and new users, to celebrate a love of reading.”

The day begins with a 3D printer demonstration at 10am, followed by a talk about eBooks and eAudio at 11am. Guided tours will run at 10.30am and 12.30pm, StoryTime is on at 1pm, while there’s plenty of chances for Lego Play between 2pm and 4pm. Those on the hunt for a sweet treat may also be lucky enough to get a slice of cake.

Taradale Library has been the main location for library services in Napier since the main building was declared earthquake prone two years ago, and the town library re-opened in a temporary location at MTG Hawke’s Bay.
