Free micro-chipping for Napier canines

Media Release

Napier dog owners can take advantage of free micro-chipping of their canine companions, thanks to a new initiative by the Napier City Council.

Until the end of September, Napier residents can have their dogs micro-chipped at no cost by the Napier City Dog Pound on Fridays between 2pm and 4.30pm.

Since 2006, all newly registered dogs in New Zealand are required by law to be micro-chipped. This regulation allows owners to be linked to their pooch should they stray or be stolen.  It also means that if dogs have a history of aggressive behaviour, they can be quickly identified by Animal Control.

“We’re hoping anyone with a dog that needs mirco-chipping will come down and take up this offer,” said Napier City Council Animal Control team leader, Steve Turpin.

Normally costing $30 at the Napier City Dog Pound, the dog’s owner details are recorded against the microchip number and then uploaded to the National Dog Database.  Should the animal be picked up by an animal control officer, delivered to a vet or dropped off at the SPCA, they can be quickly identified and returned to their owners.

While no appointments are necessary, please note the offer is only available on Fridays between 2pm – 4.30pm and is limited to 250 mirco-chips.  They are offered on a first come, first served basis. Dog owners need to bring along personal photo identification and proof of residential address.

Napier City Dog Pound is located at 2 Depot Place, Onekawa.
