Nominate a deserving Napier citizen

Alan Dick Freedom of the City 2018 00000002

Taking the time to contribute to a worthy cause is a wonderful way of giving back to society, says one person who has spent many years doing just that.

Alan Dick, who served four terms as Mayor of Napier, on the Hawke’s Bay Harbour Board and as a City Councillor, is currently a Hawke’s Bay Regional Councillor.

During this time he has also chaired the Napier City Pilot Trust and been involved with the YMCA movement, and been focussed on helping find innovative solutions to crime, vlolence and youth issues in the community. He has also had a lot to do with youth development projects locally, such as the programme of conservation at the Ahuriri estuary which still continues today.

Nominations for the 2019 Napier Citizens’ Civic Awards close at 12 noon on Thursday 27 June, and Alan encourages anyone who knows a hard-working volunteer to consider putting their name forward.

Last year he was awarded The Freedom of the City, a nice surprise and “very much appreciated” by both himself and his wider family, who accepted his frequent absences due to his various causes with good grace.

“Volunteering and helping out people is a basic human instinct and it’s the foundation of civic society. People do this without any expectation of recognition or reward, but when it happens, it is nice to be recognised and I think that’s what the awards is about.”

The Napier Citizens Civic Awards were established 42 years ago to recognise those who have given exceptional voluntary service to Napier.

Recipients in the past few years have volunteered in a variety of ways across a wide range of organisations, including the Returned Services Association, Trade Aid, St John Ambulance, Meals on Wheels, KidsCan, Napier Repertory Players, Red Cross, Napier Community Patrol and Scouts.
