Water Mains Cleaning 2018 4

It’s that time of year again - Napier City Council’s annual water mains cleaning programme is about to begin.

This work will begin next week, and run through to approximately the end of October, affecting all areas of Napier, including the industrial zones, except Napier Hill.

Letters will be circulated to the residents of the affected streets to notify them of when the work will be conducted in their particular neighbourhood. The work will take place after 9am between Tuesdays and Fridays.

Water mains cleaning schedule for Tuesday 17 August  is as follows:

  • Harold Holt Avenue (From Wycliffe Street to James Foley Avenue)
  • Coverdale Street
  • Corbett Place
  • Butler Street
  • Trevelyan Street
  • Tyndale Street
  • Keats Street
  • Caxton Street
  • Addison Street

To carry out the work, a foam swab, called a “pig”, is forced through the main, scouring it clean as water pressure propels it along before it exits the main.

Water mains cleaning is part of a routine programme of work carried out by Council during the colder months, when water demand is typically low.

Water may be available while the work is happening, but it is likely to become discoloured. Council advises people in the affected areas to minimise water use during the work period, and residents in particular to avoid using hot water, washing machines and dishwashers at this time.

People are advised not to drink discoloured water, and if they do have it, to run a cold and/or outside tap for 10 to 15 minutes until it clears.

If the problem persists, contact the Customer Service Centre immediately on (06) 835 7579.

For more information on the specific areas that will be affected each day, go to the Public Notices. Local radio stations will also broadcast information about the work.
