What will future Napier be like?

Napier District Plan

Take a break from planning for Christmas and take a moment to think about the future of Napier instead.

Over the next few weeks Napier City Council is gathering feedback from a wide range of people, organisations and community groups to find out what they think of a variety of themes that will shape the planning of our city’s future.

Your home, your future is the first stage of a detailed process that is part of the review of the existing Napier District Plan.

“This type of strategic thinking isn’t just about planning for housing, deciding when and where a road should be built, or setting some limits so the neighbours don’t get too noisy. We also need to think about the sort of places people like to relax and enjoy. We have a vision of Napier’s future, but we need the community to tell us if we’re headed in the right direction,” says Paulina Wilhelm, Manager City Development.

NCC is working towards six key outcomes: suburban growth in the hills, a premier regional park, city living supporting a vibrant CBD, leveraging our heritage, great urban areas, and a regional approach to industry.

NCC's Paulina Wilheim: "We have a vision of Napier’s future, but we need the community to tell us if we’re headed in the right direction."

Gathering feedback and different views on these themes at this early stage allows time for potential options to be explored and catered for, she says.

The Napier District Plan is a “rulebook” which manages how and where development can occur and it is only reviewed once every 10 to 15 years.

The Draft District Plan is due for release in late 2020, and there will be other opportunities to give feedback.

However, it would be good to hear from as many members of the public as possible now. “This is a unique opportunity for the community to have input into the further development of a plan which has the potential to make Napier more liveable, vibrant, and sustainable for everyone.”
