Indoor option War Memorial

Feedback is now being sought on three options for a new look Napier war memorial on Marine Parade.

The perpetual flame and Roll of Honour were moved into storage when the Napier War Memorial Conference Centre was closed in 2016 for a major redevelopment, reopening in 2017 as the Napier Conference Centre.

Videos have been produced to offer people a virtual “walk through” of each concept. The videos, and online feedback forms, are available at www.sayitnapier.nz

Information and opportunities to provide feedback is also available at Napier Libraries, Council’s Customer Service Centre, and the Napier and Taradale Returned Services Associations.

Consultation closes on 14 December.

Napier City Council staff are also meeting interested parties and talking to the public at pop-ups and other events during the consultation period.

The forecourt building option has an estimated build cost of $1.54m, the garden option $735,000, and the indoor option $840,000. The forecourt building option also has an estimated annual operating cost of $24,440, the garden option $5400, and the indoor option $24,440. These estimated costs are exclusive of GST. The three concepts are all located at the Napier War Memorial Centre.

NCC's Wayne Jack: "We acknowledge the public has been waiting to have their say and we’re pleased to be at the point of sharing these options with the community. We encourage as many people as possible to have a look at the videos to see how each of the concepts could work, and have their say."

“We acknowledge the public has been waiting to have their say and we’re pleased to be at the point of sharing these options with the community. We encourage as many people as possible to have a look at the videos to see how each of the concepts could work, and have their say,” says Wayne Jack, Chief Executive, Napier City Council.

The three options are concepts only at this stage, not final designs. Council still has to select one option after reviewing the feedback and this is expected to take place early next year.

The final cost will be confirmed once detailed design plans are complete.

Since the June Council meeting, new signage has gone up on the exterior of the building, identifying it as the Napier War Memorial Centre.

The original 1950s War Memorial Hall was renovated and enlarged into a conference centre with the memorial elements inside the building in the new foyer. An extended Roll of Honour, covering WWI, WWII and post-WWII conflicts was re-dedicated at the facility’s reopening in September 1995.

The Roll of Honour has also been reviewed over the past year. The review project team has made excellent progress, with the original list of 522 names now expanded to 1042, and covering the period of time from the Boer War, to the Vietnam War. The updated list of names was released to the public last week.

Our consultation website www.sayitnapier.nz has more information including a video walk-through of each of three options. You can also make a submission online - including your own design idea - on Say it Napier! from today until Friday 14 December.
