The Executive Director Community Services is responsible for overseeing the development and implementation of social, cultural, artistic, tourism, sport, recreation and communications and marketing strategies, policies and plans. It oversees the delivery of community services from the following facilities:

  • Napier War Memorial Centre (Napier Conferences & Events)
  • Napier Municipal Theatre
  • i-SITE Visitor Information Centre
  • Par 2 Minigolf
  • National Aquarium of New Zealand
  • Kennedy Park Resort
  • Museum Theatre Gallery (MTG Hawke's Bay)
  • Napier Libraries
  • Retirement Housing
  • Community Centres and Halls
  • McLean Park Stadium
  • Bay Skate
  • Napier Aquatic Centre

The Community Services Directorate is made up of four key functional areas: Visitor Experiences, Community Strategies, Sport & Recreation, Arts Culture & Heritage, and Communications & Marketing.

The Visitor Experiences team is responsible for the promotion and marketing of Council’s tourism and cultural facilities to maximise participation and enjoyment by both visiting locals and tourists to the city’s facilities.  

The Community Strategies team works closely with many government and non-government organisations to develop community strategies, programmes and initiatives that build capacity in the community and enhance youth development, ageing positively, community safety, and inclusivity in our city.

The Sport and Recreation team plans for and develops sports facilities, recreation programmes and opportunities for engaging the community in physical activity and recreation participation.

The Arts, Culture and Heritage team consists of MTG Hawke's Bay, Napier Municipal Theatre, Napier Libraries and the Faraday Museum of Technology.

The Communications & Marketing team is responsible for the development and implementation of all external and internal communications, marketing and media relations, including social media. This team is also responsible for the sponsorship and marketing of events.
