Putting yourself forward as a candidate for local government is a big decision. If you're successful, you'll have the opportunity to make a real difference in your community. If you miss out this time, then you've brought your ideas into the conversation and also made an important contribution.

Want to make an impact in your community?

If you are:

  • a New Zealand citizen
  • aged over 18
  • enrolled on the electoral roll and,
  • have the vision and commitment to make our community better then stand for Council in this year’s election!

In Napier City, you can stand for the role of either mayor or councillor. There is no special qualification that you need to be a member of our Council. You might run a business, care for your family, study, volunteer or be active in faith or community groups.

The skills we are looking for are:

  • leadership
  • cultural awareness
  • strategic thinking
  • quality decision-making
  • relationship building and collaboration

The nomination process

Candidate nominations are open from 15 July 2022 until 12 August 2022 at 12 noon.

To stand for Council you will need to:

  • Pay a deposit of $200. This may be refunded after the election, depending on how many votes you receive.
  • Learn more about Council and your responsibilities if you are elected.

In addition to the public meetings, as a councillor you will attend weekly workshops with staff and may also attend meetings for joint committees, working groups, regional or national local government organisations.
