Candidate for Napier Mayor Nigel Simpson

Nigel SIMPSON

Independent

My public service experience spans 40 years, from volunteer to local government Regional Manager to elected governance. I have a thorough knowledge of Local Government and its interface with Central Government. Change, reviews and reform have been constants and those experiences equip me well to lead major reforms that are about to be imposed on Napier City Council. All my roles have required me to interpret legislation and regulations, develop strategy or approved policy, and facilitate implementation programmes and projects. I have completed a Master of Business Administration, cementing in my skills in governance, leadership, strategy, finance, and change management. Continuous professional development has equipped me with prudent visionary and strategic decision-making skills. I have negotiated with and advised ministers of the Crown, mayors, chief executives, and worked closely with communities to achieve the best outcomes.

My principal place of residence is in the Napier City Council area. I am also standing for Council - Taradale Ward.
I enjoy serving our city. I would like to serve as Mayor.

Candidate for Napier Mayor John Smith John C SMITH

Resist to the nth degree forced fluoridation. Central Government gone rogue. Last three years and prior ample evidence that once elected the Beehive denizens do not represent we the people. Read: fluoridefree.org.nz/anti-science-fanaticism-andfantasy-behind-fluoridation-directive/ Increasing awareness of ample water consumption as essential. Yet fanatics after years of propaganda seek to add a toxin to the detriment of all ages. Keep up the opposition to Three Waters and other totalitarian and divisive positions and policies. Expose and resist UN and other unelected body's and think tank influence where detected in local policies. We are in unprecedented times. Strengthen local government as only bulwark against central dictatorship.
Is proposed Three Waters control structure also to function as a fluoride enforcer in those areas where there is profound local resistance? Access my previous candidacies at knowledgewagon.nz including outline of varied administrative experience, roles and philosophy.

Candidate for Napier Mayor Kirsten WiseKirsten WISE

Independent

As Napier Mayor I've achieved a lot in the past three years, establishing clean water bores, starting chlorine free investment, working with Kāinga Ora to build more housing, retaining our council housing, live-streaming council meetings, the new City Assist safety programme, progressing the return of the Station Street library, restoration of the War Memorial is underway and projects to improve the health of the estuary. But there's more to be done. We need to continue investing in our existing infrastructure and facilities. Alongside this we must navigate the many national reforms to retain local representation, accountability and ownership. With so much change at a national level it's vital we have stability and continuity within our council.
Elected members and staff have worked together to overcome the challenges of the past three years and we're ready to tackle the next three years to continue building a safe, resilient and vibrant city.

My principal place of residence is in the Napier City Council area.

Candidate for Ahuriri Ward Hayley BrowneHayley BROWNE

I've loved the variety and complexity of work in my first term as a councillor and believe I'm only getting started. I enjoy the challenge of policy development and complex decision making, balancing things like spending for Napier's prosperity with careful management of your hard earned rates. I have a background in engineering management, have travelled the world and am proud to call Napier my home. I'm passionate about representing the community, providing a voice for people and creating meaningful change for our city. I listen carefully, work hard and stand up for what's right. I'm looking forward to putting my RMA commissioner training to use in the upcoming District Plan review. Now is the time for informed decisions on the challenges we face for future generations. I want my daughters to know we did everything possible to protect their world from economic uncertainty, social inequity and climate change.

Candidate for Ahuriri Ward Louise BurnsideLouise BURNSIDE

Independent

I want to work for you. I believe in democracy and will take decisions to the people. I will seek your input and listen, whether your objectives are practical or aspirational. I believe in our local communities retaining and controlling their assets and making their own decisions - not central government.
I grew up in Napier, then left to train as a pharmacist spending many years in the UK working and completing postgraduate qualifications in clinical pharmacy. Since returning to Napier 14 years ago with my husband and two children I have been involved in Playcentre, PTA and worked as a pharmacist in hospital and community. I now have time to dedicate to the role.
With my experience as a communicator, presenter and a team player, I know I can help this beautiful, cohesive little city progress and thrive, in a way that every citizen feels part of the community.

Candidate for Ahuriri Ward Leanne Cotter ArlidgeLeanne COTTER-ARLIDGE

Independent

Tēnā koutou katoa, ko Leanne Cotter-Arlidge ahau. I am passionate about our city and I would be honoured to represent you in the Ahuriri Ward. Napier Hill is my tūrangawaewae where I was born and live with my family. We are in interesting times with climate change, Covid disruptions and other implications for Napier. There are many considerations for the local people who want reassurance that rates, services and the cost of living in our beautiful city are affordable.
I am passionate about Three Waters and the intended reform process and wanting to learn more. Water quality and ownership have been an area I have been actively involved in the past. Ensuring the War Memorial project is expedited and offering family friendly services that promote and assist wellbeing are fundamental. I offer a local voice, some fresh thinking and a bi-cultural lens. I am well qualified to make a difference!

Candidate for Ahuriri Ward Karl GoodchildKarl GOODCHILD

Law and Order

Karl Goodchild, 50, Company Director/School Board Member/Neighbourhood Watch I am standing for Council after being deeply disappointed in ongoing crime in our city. Napier Police Station has downgraded to a satellite station to Hastings. Napier City needs to have a fully working police station that is open to the public 24/7 with full custodial facilities and processing. This was taken away from Napier City in the recent Napier Police Station rebuild with officers having to make the long trip to Hastings to process offenders, taking police off the streets of Napier for extended periods of time. Travel times have also increased due to speed limits on major roads being reduced to 80kph and an often-congested expressway.
I would also like to see Napier have a free 24/7 emergency medical facility which is fully staffed with doctors and nurses to serve our ever growing community.

My principal place of residence is in the Ahuriri Ward area.

Candidate for Ahuriri Ward Keith PriceKeith PRICE

Keith is a well-respected member of the community who has served as a councillor for five terms, the last in the Ahuriri Ward. Keith is known for his 28 year career as a Detective Sergeant in the NZ Police, and his years of commitment to sport through both rugby and basketball.
He has also run a successful hospitality business in Ahuriri.
During Keith's time with Council, and as Chair of Council's Infrastructure Committee, Keith has championed significant projects for Ahuriri, with a focus on revitalisation and supporting community projects.
He led the Marine Parade design and development, roading network changes, environmental improvements and reduction in freedom camping spaces.
Keith is an approachable councillor, who works hard to advocate for residents on many issues. His priorities this term are retaining our water assets, safe communities and smart city-growth.
Vote Keith Price for a strong, experienced leader with big vision for our community.

My principal place of residence is not in the Ahuriri Ward area.

Candidate for Nelson Park Ward Maxine BoagMaxine BOAG

Supporting the community

Throughout my years on Council, I've been active in the community, developing positive relationships with a diverse range of individuals, organisations and businesses throughout the Nelson Park ward. While being involved in numerous voluntary groups, including Grey Power and community trusts, I've listened, assisted and advocated for residents through Council channels. The well-being of our most vulnerable citizens has always been of particular concern to me, especially in the difficult times we experienced in the last three years. This term I chaired the People and Places standing committee, the Community Services Grants Committee and held the Housing portfolio. I actively supported keeping our pensioner flats, our Positive Ageing and Disability strategies, our new Āwhina Tāngata street ambassadors and community facilities for Maraenui. Safer streets, affordable housing and addressing climate change are some of my priority areas for the future. Working in partnership, we can tackle our city's challenges together.

Candidate for Nelson Park Ward Sally CrownSally CROWN

Capable-Collaborative-Community minded

Council is a team sport. You've got to be able to listen, persuade and work together to achieve great outcomes for the community. I've proven myself to be capable, collaborative and community minded. Despite the challenges of a flood and pandemic, we've set the groundwork on key projects and initiatives such as low manganese water bores for clear water, War Memorial restoration, relooking at pool financials to ensure you get the right pool in the right place for the right price, successful central government funding bids for infrastructure growth, Napier Assist, said No to Three Waters, more community council partnerships, Te Pihinga, retained council housing, future estuary management, and others to move Napier forward.
I advocate fiercely for my ward and its people. My business is based there and I am chairperson of Roopū a Iwi Trust. I hope you'll allow me the privilege of continuing to serve Napier.

Candidate for Nelson Park Ward Juliet GreigJuliet GREIG

I live with my partner, Andy, a plumber, in Nelson Crescent, Napier South. We have two boys attending Nelson Park School. For several years I worked as a teacher in secondary schools, including two years at William Colenso College.

The last few years I've focused on bringing up our boys. I previously petitioned Council for a playground to be built at the Rose Gardens in Marewa.

The playground was built in 2017 and is now enjoyed by tamariki in the area. This year I successfully campaigned for a safer road crossing for pedestrians on Latham Street in Napier South.

If elected, I'd work closely with residents and colleagues. More than ever, we need councillors who are attuned to the communities we serve.

Candidate for Nelson Park Ward Greg MawsonGreg (Grego) MAWSON

Working with you, for you

Hello, Grego here! I'm honoured to be standing to represent our ward. I'm a husband, father, grandfather, friend, small business owner, mentor and resident in our beautiful ward. I pride myself on my care and commitment to helping people. In 2019, I was elected to listen and help.
As the Council's aged and disability portfolio holder, I'm proud to have worked hard for accessibility issues in our community. I've worked to engage on the issues that are most important to you. During the lockdowns and flooding, I partnered with community organisations to volunteer and shop daily for some of our city's most vulnerable.
I'm not afraid to step up and put in the hard work.
As your Councillor, I promise to continue to keep listening, to keep bringing your issues to the council table, and to keep working tirelessly to support our city. I always put my community first.

Candidate for Nelson Park Ward Nigel OlsenNigel OLSEN

Despite living in an age of unparalleled connectivity, that sense of belonging doesn't seem to extend to the activities of local council.

People do not feel listened to and perceive themselves as being side-lined and ignored. I want to turn that idea on its head.

I want to immerse myself in that sphere and attempt to initiate change, to show people that they do indeed have agency.

Candidate for Onekawa Tamatea Te Kira LawrenceTe Kira LAWRENCE

My principal place of residence is in the Onekawa-Tamatea Ward area.
I am a Napier born and bred resident, within the ward in Tamatea where my daughter attends school and I work at the local intermediate school. Tamatea is also where our family home has been for the last 30 years.

As a first-time standing candidate, I believe I can offer a fresh perspective, an open mind, and a genuine desire to listen to what the residents need. I want to see this city flourish and move forward with the changing times.
To do this we need to be open to new ideas and ways of doing things. I don't have all the answers and one person out of 12 in a council can make a small difference, but rest assured I am willing to try my best to work with the people and for the people.

Working together for Onekawa/Tamatea

Napier is a great place to live, work and raise a family. I care about our city; a city for everyone. My past, proven, leadership with St John, and as a nurse/manager of NZ Blood Service, shows I take a people first approach. The community is forefront of my decision making, and I have advocated for improved community engagement. I listened, and supported, keeping council housing, and supported our Napier Assist programme.
Projects you asked me to prioritise; pool, water, library, War Memorial, and estuary, all have plans. We will need a stable and experienced council to deliver these for you. Experience and continuity matter and will be key to the success of these projects.
I fight for what is right, including keeping your 3 Waters assets. I support council strategies, such as the disability and aged initiatives. I hope you will allow me to represent you again. Thank you.

Candidate for Taradale Ward Ronda ChrystalRonda CHRYSTAL

Independent

It's been a privilege to represent the Taradale Ward on Napier City Council over the past 3 challenging years. With a farming and science background, I bring a common sense, down to earth attitude and enjoy interacting and helping our community. My campaign slogan was Fix the basics first, which this current council has prioritised, focusing on water, infrastructure, asset management and environmental issues. Keeping council housing was a significant decision, so the residents of our villages have the security of a place to live. I look forward to the next council term when we will finally see the memorial elements returned to our War Memorial, a new library built, decisions made on our aquatic facilities and many water projects completed.
As a 4th generation Napierite I'm passionate about Napier, its people, history and future. I would appreciate your vote to continue being your community voice on Council.

She understands the importance of future-planning for water, biodiversity and climate change.
She values the expertise of NGO's and community organisations. Maria and her five siblings were raised in Taradale. She moved away to train as a nurse and travel and returned to Taradale to raise her daughter. Maria then supported her elderly parents and has first-hand experience of disability.
A long career in the disability and education sector, volunteering in conservation work, and strong flaxroots political experience, equip Maria to interact with individuals, community organisations, businesses, councils and government departments.

I love Taradale, and work tirelessly for our urban and rural residents. Since you elected me in 2019, I have taken every opportunity to seek improvements for the Taradale ward area. I'm on the Taradale Business Association and attend Taradale Residents Association meetings, and have worked with staff to review pedestrian safety around Taradale shops.Improvements have been made on Symons Lane, and I have argued for improvements to Puketitiri Road.
We have new playgrounds in Te Awa and Parklands, and plans for Taradale West, and the new McRae Field has a new public toilet.
