Rubbish, recycling, food waste & flood-damaged items

Find out more on Napier's kerbside rubbish and recycling collections and how to dispose of your food waste and flood-damaged household items.

Kerbside rubbish collection

Our kerbside rubbish collection has resumed as normal. Even though we’ll have lots of our usual household rubbish, it’s important to only fill the bin and not place anything on top or beside your bin.

Kerbside recycling collection

Kerbside recycling has resumed as normal. Please only use your three black NCC owned and provided crates to put out your kerbside recycling. Please don't overfill your bins - we ask that you drip feed the back log over the next few weeks if you can.

Remember to:

  • Flatten cardboard boxes
  • Remove all food, liquids and plastic wrap/sleeves
  • Rinse and squash items if required
  • In Napier, plastic types 1, 2 & 5 can be recycled. These are high value plastics such as milk bottles and soft drink bottles. Check the bottom of the container to see the number.

Food waste

Our dedicated food waste disposal service is no longer operating. Try to limit your food waste by composting your green materials. View our quick start guide to composting for helpful information and tips on recycling your food scraps. Please place all other food waste in your kerbside rubbish bin.

Redclyffe Transfer Station

Redclyffe Transfer Station is now open for general waste, green waste and recycling services.

  • Upon entering the transfer station there will be two queues, one for recycling only (right hand side) and one for recycling and general waste (left hand side).
  • There is only one operational weighbridge at the moment so please be patient and expect queues.
  • Flood-damaged waste will now need to be weighed but remains free of charge.
  • General waste and green waste will be charged as per normal rates.
  • Recycling can be dropped off for free.
  • We are unable to accept cash at this time. Please pay by EFTPOS, Credit Card or with a pre-existing account.

Redclyffe Transfer Station Standard business hours: Monday to Saturday 7.30am-4.45pm, Sunday 9am-4.45pm with all customers to be off-site by 5pm every day

Silt collection

To advise an address for rural or residential silt collection please call 0800 108 838 and press 2 for cyclone-related waste collections. For more information, please visit our silt collection page here.

Other flood waste

The HB Regional Council has identified a number of waste types which will need to be dealt with in different ways. They ask that you keep these waste types separate to minimize the amount of mixed-waste that end up in already overloaded waste sites.

The types of waste covered are:

  • Animal (livestock) carcass retrieval and disposal
  • Silt
  • Wood debris
  • Posts and wire

Advice on disposing of the following wastes will be provided later:

  • Hazardous materials and
  • Chemical waste
