We're taking the opportunity to upgrade the streetscape while necessary infrastructure works are undertaken.
Beneath the surface of Emerson Street there’s a lot going on with infrastructure for power, telecoms and water weaving under the street. We need to look after Emerson and make sure it’s got what it needs to continue being the centre of the action.
The street has an uneven surface that can be dangerous. It is cluttered with signs, bins, bollards and street furniture and this makes it difficult to use for some people. The way the traffic moves can encourage drivers and pedestrians to behave unpredictably.
Over the last year, we’ve talked to all kinds of people who use Emerson. We’ve asked visitors and locals, business owners and people who live and work in the inner city what they want and need from this street. The works we’re undertaking are essential, but they give us a great opportunity to rethink Emerson, rework it so it is safer, more accessible and easier to use while still retaining its iconic look and style.

Our Design Services team have now finished the 100% Concept Design. The next stage is to move on to Detailed Design. This will be completed by the end of 2024.
Better off Funding was provided by central government as part of the Three Water Reform process. This fund is to be used by councils to improve amenity and provide positive community outcomes.
This project has been allocated $1.65 million of Better Off Funding. This will cover the full concept design of Emerson Street (Stages 1-4), detailed design of Stages 1 and 2 and some physical works in Stage 1.
