Featuring 500 metres of continuous track, the $342,000 Napier Bike Track opened in March 2015. Inspired by a Swiss track in Mendrisio, ours was the first of its kind in New Zealand.
Planning started: May 2014
Construction started: January 2015
Completed: March 2015
The Napier City Council approved the construction of a bike pump track on Marine Parade in October 2014. It is located south of the carpark, opposite the Ellison Street entrance.
Napier’s bike pump track is the first of its kind in New Zealand.
The basic goal of a pump track, besides having fun, is for the rider to learn how to pump the terrain to maintain speed. Pump tracks are set up with a series of rollers and berms that allow the rider to gain and maintain speed along the track without pedalling.
Designed by Jeff Carter of Rotorua’s South Star Adventures, the pump track is inspired by a track located in Mendrisio, Switzerland.
This full size pump track has replaced the junior pump track and caters for a much wider range of skills, abilities, and ages. It covers an area of 60 metres long by 30 metres wide and consists of 500 metres of continuous tracks.
The project cost $342,000. The pump track component cost $150,000 with the rest of the funds being for roading realignment, shade sails, park furniture and landscaping.
The track caters for a wide range of skills, abilities and ages and can also be used by keen skateboarders and scooter riders.
