Napier Youth Council

Youth Council address Napier City Councillors at a meeting. The Youth Council (YCON) is made up of 18 teenaged Napierites. Places become available at the end of each calendar year, when we receive nominations from high schools, education providers, workplaces and community organisation.

Each year the YCON set their work plan which involves projects, events and liaising with Council. As well as leading programmes themselves, they also get involved in a range of other community activities.

YCON gives Napier youth opportunities to develop skills, take on leadership roles and to promote young people in a positive way.

Check out YCON’s Facebook page for their latest news.

Bella Spiers

Position: Youth Council of Napier

Hey! My name’s Bella and I’m a 16-year-old Year 12 student at Napier Girls' High School. I joined the Youth Council this year as I want to challenge the traditional views people hold of youth and let them know we’re capable of great things. A little bit about me - my main interests include debating, singing and drama, but I’m willing to give anything a go. I've always wanted to give back to my community and hope I can contribute to Napier becoming a happier place!

Charlotte Townsend

Position: Youth Council of Napier

Hi! I'm Charlotte, I'm 15-years-old and a student at Iona College. I've been fortunate enough to be part of the Napier Youth Council for a couple of years now, having started out in 2016 as the 'baby'. I've lived in Hawke's Bay all my life, but travelled to China and America in 2017. While it was a great adventure, coming back to New Zealand made me realise how lucky we are.

Ella Herekiuha

Position: Youth Council of Napier

Hey, I’m Ella. I’m 14 and I go to Taradale High School. 2018 is my first year on YCON and I’m loving it. I love meeting new people and hope to start a change in Napier through organising some cool events for youth. A little bit about me? I play guitar, sing, play netball and enjoying spending time with my friends and family.

Emma Chard

Position: Youth Council of Napier

My name is Emma Chard: I'm a Year 12 student at Napier Girls High School and a new member to youth council this year. I'm excited to be here: I believe all youth in Napier should have a well-heard voice in our community, and a place where opinions are not only heard, but recognised. I want to see some changes in the way the youth of Napier interact with the community and show what we can achieve. I'm committed to bringing positive change and helping shape a better future for the youth of today!

Ezra Broughton-Spar

Position: Youth Council of Napier

Kia ora, my name is Ezra Broughton-Spar. I am 16 years old and I attend Te Aratika Academy. This is my first year as a YCON member and I'm blessed with all the opportunities it brings. I think that the best way youth can be leaders is not by acting as individuals, but working in concert with others to show different pathways for the future. This year will be very exciting and I can't wait for what's to come! I have a huge passion for basketball as well as singing, mau rākau and hangin' with my whānau.

Gabby Heaps

Position: Youth Council of Napier

Hi, I'm Gabby Heaps, a Year 12 student from Taradale High School. I love food, travelling and playing guitar. I also enjoy dancing: I've done this for many years. After high school, I hoping to get into Otago University Medical School. But that's all in the future. Why did I apply to be on Youth Council. I am very proud of Napier and all it has to offer. I want my friends and peers to discover this and take advantage of it too.

Guy Harrison

Position: Youth Council of Napier

Hi there, I'm Guy. I'm thrilled to be part of a group that'll work together to make Napier a better place for young people. I'm also keen to be the voice of disabled kids in our community and ensure they have equal opportunities. I'm currently a Year 12 student Napier Boys High school: I've also represented New Zealand in the 800m and 1500m in para athletics.

Jack Thomson

Position: Youth Council of Napier

I love my city and I'm a proud Napierite. I care about what happens in Napier and how we can grow our town. I also have a strong will and am not shy to voice my opinion. I have spoken publicly at a Breast Cancer rally and and a meeting on housing. I love the idea of being involved in a group that'll benefit other youth.

Jayda Karauria

Position: Youth Council of Napier

Kia ora, my name's Jayda Karauria, and I’m 17 years old. I’m a year 13 student at William Colenso College and am very passionate about my community. I enjoy being on the youth council: it's a privilege to work with a group of people to prepare for the future. In my spare time, I like keeping active and listening to music. Next year I hope to study animal care with an eye to becoming a veterinarian.

I have lived in Napier my whole life and when I leave school I'm either going to study law or secondary school teaching.

Malachi Rai

Position: Youth Council of Napier

Kia ora, my name is Malachi Rai. I'm a 17 year-old student at William Colenso College. I'm a man of few words: I perfer to get on and do things, rather than talk myself up.

Mikaylah Selby

Position: Youth Council of Napier

Kia ora, my name is Mikaylah Selby: I'm 17 years old and the Head Girl of Tamatea High School. This year I was accepted on the Napier Youth Council and I was over the moon about it. Helping my peers and the youth of Napier has always been a passion for me as I've always wanted to make a difference - even if it's a small difference. I look forward to working alongside the rest of the Youth Council this year and can't wait to have loads of fun!

Olivia Cooper

Position: Youth Council of Napier

My name is Olivia Cooper, I'm in year 13 at Napier Girls' High School. This is my first year being part of the Napier Youth Council. I'm passionate about a lot of things, especially Art Painting and Graphics. I also love to help out people whereever I can: I volunteer at the National Aquarium and previously at the Art Deco Shop. Next year I'll most likely travel, then start my studying as a painting Architect the following year. In my spare time, I lead the chess club (breaking that glass ceiling with girls and chess), sing opera, and am slowly working towards my Gold Duke of Edinburgh award. I look forward to making a difference in Napier.

Shanae Coon

Position: Youth Council of Napier

Hey! My name is Shanae and I am 16 years old. I attend Tamatea High School. This is my first year on the Napier Youth Council. The reason I'm here is to make a difference for our community and improve things for our youth. In my spare time, I enjoy sports and spending time with my family and friends. In the near future, I'd like to enter the navy and travel the world, or go to university and study physiology.

Theodore Apineru

Position: Youth Council of Napier

Hello there. I'm a 14-year-old Samoan and student at Napier Boys'. I enjoy art, drama and acting and love listening to music. But I also have highbrow interests - I love eating and sleeping! I joined the Napier Youth Council for the experience, but also so I could add the perspective of Pasifika youth. I look forward to the work we're going to encounter this year.

Trenalee Hodgkinson

Position: Youth Council of Napier

Hiya! My name's Trena, and I go to William Colenso College. I'm 17 years old and this is my first year on the youth council. Kia ora, my name is Tyler Taurima-Brown. I'm 15 years old and currently attend Tamatea High School as a Year 12 student. This is my first year being a part of the YCON team and so far it has been amazing. I have a massive affinity with our people especially our youth. I want to be able to reduce poverty, suicide, unemployment and crime within our community. What do I with my spare time? Much of it is filled with kapa haka, sport, whānau time and study. My biggest goal at the moment is to be Head Girl at Tamatea High in 2019 helping people is way up my alley.

Urmandip Sekhon

Position: Youth Council of Napier

Hey! My name is Urmandip. I am 18 years old and a student at Sacred Heart College, Napier. I’m passionate about producing a physically and mentally sustainable environment by empowering young people to help them realise their limitless potential and fulfill their ambitions. Napier is a very diverse city with many different people and I want young people to feel valued, respected and safe in the Napier community regardless of race, gender, beliefs, religion and characteristics. I want to ensure significant issues such as mental health, child poverty and gender inequality are addressed. My interests? I love science, medicine & anatomy, reading and of course Riverdale (!) I like to debate (watch out!), travel, play netball and go for evening walks.
