Napier Youth Council

Youth Council address Napier City Councillors at a meeting. The Youth Council (YCON) is made up of 10-14 young people aged between 12 and 24. Places become available at the end of each calendar year, when we receive nominations from high schools, education providers, workplaces and community organisation.

Each year the YCON set their work plan which involves projects, events and liaising with Council. As well as leading programmes themselves, they also get involved in a range of other community activities.

YCON gives Napier youth opportunities to develop skills, take on leadership roles and to promote young people in a positive way.

Check out YCON’s Facebook page for their latest news.

Abby Owens

Position: Youth Council of Napier

Hello! I’m currently 17 years old and a year 13 at Sacred Heart College. I joined YCON because I believe one of the powerful things youth should embrace is their right of choice and voicing their opinion. I felt YCON was the perfect way to do this. I am the Arts leader at Sacred Heart and a part of the community committee there too. Although the arts are my passion, I’m planning to go to University to study Criminal Sociology and Anthropology. This will hopefully happen after a year of travelling and volunteering in schools and communities in Europe. I’m super excited for everything this year in Napier and hope you are too!

Position: Youth Council of Napier

Hi! I am currently a year 13 student at Taradale High School. Leadership is a huge passion and being apart of the Youth Council 2017 is giving me the skills to grow as a person, leader, and motivator. I believe it is important to have a student voice for Napier youth so they feel their feelings, values and queries are sincerely being heard and delivered. I hope to move into the health sector or youth work as a career and will take skills learned in management and leadership to get me there.

Bella Spiers

Position: Youth Council of Napier

Hey! I am a 15 year old, year 11 student at Napier Girls' High School! I joined the Youth Council this year as I want to challenge traditional views people hold of youth and let them know that we are capable of great things! I have also always wanted to give back to my community, I believe that this role will deliver the platform I need to make a change and difference within Napier. I feel as if I am able to successfully represent the youth of Napier as I am involved in a wide range of activities. My main interests include debating, singing and drama but I am willing to give anything a go. I can't wait for the year ahead of vocalising youths concerns and contributing to Napier becoming a happier place!

Claire Downey

Position: Youth Council of Napier

I’m a year 13 student at Iona College this year. I’m particularly passionate about being a member of the Youth Council of Napier as I believe in making Napier a better place for the youth. I think that Napier has a great environment to foster the growth of its youth and feel that giving them a platform on which to speak their minds about the city they live in is really important. I’ve personally appreciated growing up in Napier and now want to give back to the place that has given me so many opportunities. In my spare time I debate and am also apart of SADD and Amnesty groups at school. I am planning on studying Law at university next year and believe that Youth Council is a really good place for me to gain skills to go towards my tertiary study.

I'm currently a year 13 student at Sacred Heart College. I'm passionate about environmental issues and fairness for all. Being apart of the Youth Council has been very important to me as it not only gives me the opportunity to further my leadership skills but to also help create opportunities for others to have their voices heard. I hope to travel to the United States at the end of year and then pursue a Law Degree in 2018. I'm looking forward to the year ahead and hope everyone has a great 2017!

I am a 17 year old year 12 student currently attending Taradale High School and I have lived in Napier all my life. I love astronomy, food, sport and watching TV shows. I also enjoy traveling, reading, design and making the most of opportunities to have fun and challenge myself. I am passionate about being involved in what goes on in our community, making positive change and helping to shape a better future for the youth of today!

Will Evans

Position: Youth Council of Napier

Hi! My name is Will Evans and I’m a year 13 student at Lindisfarne College. I’m passionate about trying to create a fairer, more sustainable society along with giving back to the community that I have been so privileged to be a part of. Being part of the Youth Council of Napier gives me a myriad of opportunities not only to increase my own skill set but also to work towards creating a better City for the youth. In my spare time I take a keen interest in politics both here and in the UK, debating, the great outdoors and of course in Netflix. I am planning on studying Law and Economics before eventually making a leap into politics. I believe that the youth council will provide great experiences that will be useful in all of these fields.

Hi! I’m 18 years old and go to Taradale High School. I've been on YCON for three years now and this year I'm Chairperson. I have a huge passion for helping youth and aiding them to reach their potential. In my spare time I enjoy photography, dance, volunteering and shopping. I also have a passion for the French language and travel. Next year I hope to travel around England and attend National Broadcasting School over there. I enjoy leadership positions and believe that 2017 will be my most influential in the Youth Council of Napier.

Charlotte Townshend

Position: Youth Council of Napier

Hi! I'm the youngest member of the Napier Youth Council. I'm 13 years old and I go to Iona College. I joined Napier Youth Council last year. I have lived in Hawke's Bay all my life but I've travelled to China and America. It was a great adventure, but coming back to New Zealand made me realise how lucky we are.

Shanae Donaldson

Position: Youth Council of Napier

I'm 17 years old and I go to Tamatea High School. I'm passionate about being on the Youth Council because I believe all youth should have a voice and a place where their opinions can not only be heard but also be recognised. I'm on the Youth Council because I want to make a positive change and although it won't be a massive one, any step in a good direction is a right one. I enjoy going to the gym in my spare time and also love lots of different sports - although I don't have a lot of time for it. I'm really looking forward to the events being planned already for this year and also looking forward to being able to form bonds with all the other amazing youth on the Youth Council and in Napier in general. In the future I'm hoping to be accepted into Law School at Victoria University.

Kia ora! I'm 16 years old and attend Tamatea High School. I'm passionate about being on the Youth Council of Napier because it gives me an opportunity to be involved in something that supports such a good cause, which are the children/kid/teenagers of Napier. I enjoy the Youth Council because I can speak for those who don't have a voice but have a lot to say. I'm happy I made the choice to apply to be a member of the Youth Council! It is one of my greatest accomplishments to date.
