Chemical clean out helps out households

Published: 12 March 2025

Clear chemicals out of cupboards

Hazmobile is out and chemical clean out is in. The annual hazardous waste clear out event has been replaced by a new initiative focused solely on household chemicals.

Household chemical clean out is on Sunday 30 March with those attending needing to register through their council.

Stefni Wilson, Napier City Council’s Waste Minimisation Lead, explains the event offers Hastings and Napier residents the opportunity to safely dispose of hazardous household items they no longer need or have accumulated over time.

“Since Hazmobile was introduced, local providers have started accepting all kinds of hazardous material year-round so there are lots of options for households to clean things out on a regular basis, rather than waiting to book once a year,” says Stefni. “The thing that’s missing is a waste solution for chemicals like bleach, pool chemicals, fertilizers, pesticides, cleaners and disinfectants.”

Hastings District Council Waste Planning Manager Angela Atkins is pleased to see an increase in local disposal options and encourages residents to look at the A-Z Waste Guide for comprehensive information on safe disposal and recycling options.

“Providing residents with year-round alternatives for hazardous waste disposal not only enhances convenience but also improves safety by reducing stockpiling risks. This new event format ensures we can manage hazardous waste more effectively while keeping our community safe.”

Household chemical clean out is for Hastings and Napier residents. Read more or register your interest here.
