Join the solution to plastic pollution

All over the world, organisations, businesses and schools are getting behind ‘Plastic Free July’, a global movement helping millions of people be part of the solution to plastic pollution.

Napier City Council is pleased to join the movement by hosting a number of interactive environmental workshops during July, encouraging people to choose to refuse single-use plastic.

Cameron Burton, Napier City Council’s Environmental Solutions Manager, says if everyone made small changes and refused to use plastic wherever possible, collectively it would make a significant difference to the amount of plastic polluting our city, country and the planet.

“Whether that means swapping plastic straws for reusable metal straws, opting for paper bags rather than plastic when supermarket shopping, or re-using water bottles it all helps,” Cameron says.

New Zealand’s own waste-free warrior, Kate Meads, kicks off the series of workshops with her ‘Do One Thing - Waste Free Living' event at the Pettigrew-Green Arena, Napier on Wednesday, July 6. Tickets are $20 and include a free toolkit worth $100.

“In this time of consumerism and climate chaos, we are facing some big challenges.

We can do nothing and nothing will change, but the problem won't go away and our future generations will pay the price,” Kate says.

“We need to do something, but what is it and where do we start?  We start with doing one thing. This workshop is not just about learning what the issues are and what we need to do to change the outcome, it's about becoming part of the solution by simply doing something.”

Following Kate’s workshop, there will be a ‘Make your own Bees Wax Wraps’ workshop on Wednesday, July 20, followed by a ‘Make your own Household Cleaning Products’ workshop on Wednesday, July 27. Both workshops will be held at Taradale Library, White Street, from 4-5pm.
