Litter and the HB marine environment

Published: 29 August 2016

Last Updated: 12 May 2017

A programme highlighting the impact litter has on beaches and marine life is set to screen on Television Hawke’s Bay at 8pm this Friday, 2 September.

Hosted and written by National Aquarium of New Zealand Educator Jake Brookie, the programme looks at the bigger picture and how marine litter is impacting Hawkes’ Bay. Guests include fellow Educator Jacque Wilton, who specialises in waste minimisation, National Aquarium Aquarist/Keeper Tara Churchwell, and Sarah Grant and Andrea Leadbetter from the Environment Centre Hawke’s Bay. It was filmed and edited by Luke Pell, who donated his time and skills to the project.

“When covering an issue as far-reaching as this one, it is too easy to get weighed down by bleak predictions and depressing statistics, so the episode is as much about how to make a difference as it is about the impacts,” says Jake.

It includes behind the scenes footage of the Aquarium’s penguin cove, as well as close ups of other animals there. “It is wonderful to be able to raise awareness about the ocean in this way, and I am grateful for the support of the aquarium and Television Hawke’s Bay,” says Jake.

The episode is the second in a series which grew from an idea Jake had to publicise Seaweek in a different way earlier this year. The Aquarium is an official supporter of Seaweek, which celebrated its 25th anniversary earlier this year.

TV Hawke’s Bay is free to air on Channel 48 for Freeview and igloo users.
