Napier City Council’s Biological Trickling Filter (BTF) plant is progressing and is on target to meet its completion deadline later this year.

The $32.7 million BTF Wastewater Treatment Plant, being constructed adjacent to the existing milliscreening plant in Awatoto, is part of the Council’s commitment to providing advanced sewage treatment for the city. Forward-thinking has meant that the project has already been largely funded for already through rates levies.

“It is one of the biggest projects ever undertaken by the Napier City Council,” BTF Wastewater Treatment Plant Project Manager, Jayne Perrin says.

Significant project milestones have been reached with the completion of the main pump station – including four wet wells below ground (where the effluent enters) and a large dry well (where the mechanical pumps and equipment are housed), of two precast concrete panel tanks.

German-sourced plastic media and a Swedish sprinkler arm which sits on top of the tanks central column have also been installed. Commissioning of the eight-arm distributor mechanism, which will distribute screened wastewater onto plastic filter media in each of the two BTF tanks, will be completed this month. Mechanical and electrical equipment are being tested at the same time.

“We are really pleased that a project of this size is going relatively smoothly. The site has been very busy lately with dedicated contractors working long hours to meet construction and commissioning commitments,” Ms Perrin says.

Numerous concrete surfaces around the plant will eventually be coated with a fibreglass coating to offer extra surface protection and corrosion resistance from the wastewater and coastal environment. The different structures around the plant have been designed with operation, maintenance and durability in mind.

During the coming months flow control penstocks and slide gates will be installed, along with grit removal equipment and aluminium dome covers for both tanks will also be installed.

Tenders will soon go out for work to build the air-treatment biofilter as well as for the installation of fans and ventilation pipework.
