paul collits2A new shared service agreement between Napier City Council (NCC) and Central Hawke’s Bay District Council (CHBDC) is exciting news, says a local business owner.

After months of planning, a new agreement is in place which will see NCC’s economic development expert Paul Collits be seconded to CHBDC to help them develop their economic development strategy.

The move was welcomed by businesswoman Alexandra Walker, who owns The Chook House.

"There is an incredible depth of talent and passion that resides in our Central Hawke's Bay community. And they have the drive to create a growing economy provided that there is support and leadership in place to help smooth the path," she said.

"At The Chook House, I have seen the difference that a supportive environment can make to local businesses so I am excited that our local council is committed to bringing additional resource into the community to continue that support."

Dr Collits, who has worked in economic development for over 20 years, says he is looking forward to creating a plan that will boost Central Hawke’s Bay economy.

“This is another example of a way councils in the region are working together,” said CHBDC Mayor Peter Butler. “If the dam goes ahead there will be some great downstream opportunities for business in CHB and we will need a solid strategy in place so we are ready. Dr Collits has a remarkable reputation and we’re delighted he’s going to be helping us put a plan in place.”

Dr Collits will divide his time between the two councils, said Napier City Council CE Wayne Jack.

“He’s excited by the opportunity to work on regional economic development. He’s got plenty of great ideas and we think he’ll be an asset to Central Hawke’s Bay, especially when it comes to identifying ways to boost the local economy.”
