New vision for Napier City Council tractors

Napier City Council staff member points out new safety equipment on tractor. Napier City Council tractors now feature extra safety features in the form of optical mirrors and television monitoring systems.

Napier City Council Services Manager, Lance Titter and Health and Safety Coordinator, Michelle Warren, reviewed the entire operating procedures for Council-owned tractors after an unfortunate incident involving a tractor last year.

“The incident prompted Napier City Council to review our standard operating procedures for our grounds staff,” Mr Titter says.

“We consulted with all of our large tractor operators and from that we learned that our staff were keen to maximise their vision while operating the machinery. They wanted to ensure there were no blind-spots when they were using the tractors.”

As a result, optical mirrors, providing 180-degree vision, have been fitted to complement the mirrors already fitted on the five John Deer 5225 tractors. A television monitor and cameras have also been fitted, enabling the operators’ full vision of the drive shaft, front rollers and side deck.

“It has been a real team effort,” Mr Titter says. “All staff have been involved and as a result everyone has benefited from the additional safety factors.”
