Centennial Hall (now know as Rodney Green Centennial Event Centre) gets a new lease of life.
The redevelopment of Centennial Hall was planned in two stages with a work programme tailored to have the least impact on the users of the venue. Centennial Hall was closed for six months for the final stage of what was a two year, multi staged, and multi dollared facelift.
Stage OneWhich was completed in 2003, saw major alterations to the entrance foyer, toilet facilities, storage, and the provision of additional service rooms on the mezzanine floor.
Stage TwoIn mid 2004 Stage 2 of the redevelopment was started. This stage has essentially seen the strip out and refit of the kitchen and dining rooms, changing and toilet facilities, mezzanine floor and the main body of the hall itself.
A key design concept of this stage was to ensure that the venue was flexible in its use options to enable equal access to facilities from either the hall itself or from McLean Park.
In order to complete the interior refit the seating area of the Centennial Hall Stand that faces onto McLean Park also required major work including vast quantities of structural steel and waterproofing.
Final StageIn order to complete this final stage the venue has been closed to users since October. The work programme was managed; however to enable the hall and kitchen to be tested for the first time at the NZ Australia one dayer on 5 march, and for two subsequent weekend volleyball tournaments.
With the hand over of the completed venue back to Council expected in mid to late April its now a matter of getting the everyday users up and running with equipment reinstated and gear back into the new storage facilities provided.
After two years of working around builders, dust and disruption these groups are busting to be in and reaping the rewards for their tolerance and patience.
Already a number of potential users have visited the venue with view to hire for their trade shows, product launches, dinners, bowls tournaments, and even a ball! Feedback on the upgrade has been a unanimous WOW!!
This redevelopment has given the Centennial Hall a new life. It has opened up the venue to new markets and will ensure that the venue continues to service the community into the future, as was the intent way back in 1959.
