Any enquiries about the possibility of installing or placement of artwork in public places should be made to the Community Development Department.

Refer to the Council's Arts policy as a guideline of local heritage and arts in Napier.

If you are still interested in submitting a proposal for your art work, one off art project or art installation in public places in Napier the next steps in the process are:

  • Stage 1 - Criteria for Art Project Contact the Community Development Advisor to discuss and work through criteria as required in Stage 1. Once your proposal has met the criteria, the Community Development Advisor will arrange a meeting with the Arts Advisory Panel to consider the proposal and meet with you.
  • Stage 2 - Arts Advisory Panel Consideration All new proposals for art work or art installations in public places must be assessed and approved through the Arts Advisory Panel. The Arts Advisory Panel was set up to make recommendations to Council on the suitability of one-off art for a particular location giving considerations to the uniqueness of the community into which it is to be installed, and the heritage and cultural values of the site.
  • Stage 3 - Council's Community Development Committee receive recommendation. The Arts Advisory Panel's recommendations are tabled at the Council's Sub-Committee for discussion. The sub-committee may approve or decline the recommendation of the Arts Advisory Panel.
  • Stage 4 - Full Council meeting to decide on recommendation. The final recommendation from the Council's Community Development Committee is discussed at the full Council meeting. Council may approve or decline the recommendation. You will be advised of Council's decision and advised of the next course of action.
