Planning Started: May 2008
Construction Started: June 2008
Completed: November 2008

Widening the coastal boardwalk between Spriggs Park and the Perfume Point carpark is the most recent development in the Napier walkway/cycleway network.

The 300m raised boardwalk has more than doubled in width - from 1.8m to 4m - to accommodate cyclists and allow more "wander room" for walkers.

The wider boardwalk also aligns with the new stretch of walkway/cycleway extending the length of the park.

Grip-tread timber boards were chosen for the boardwalk to give better skid resistance in wet and frosty conditions. To avoid cupping, the boards were nailed down using 15cm bridge spikes specially designed for the purpose.

The access point alongside Hot Chick has been improved, and a strip of existing garden removed at the western end of the public carpark to give cyclists and walkers a traffic-free link between the beach and Hardinge Road.

On the seaward side, a low wide stepdown maximises the sand volleyboard area.

Funded by New Zealand Transport (formerly Land Transport New Zealand), the Rotary Pathway Trust and the Napier City Council, the new boardwalk has a more curved design to suit cyclists and to better integrate the design into the beachscape.
