The Kennedy Road/Bill Hercock Street/Trinity Crescent intersection is about to be upgraded to reduce its crash rate and to allow the introduction of marked cycle lanes in Kennedy Road.
The 2006 Crash Reduction Study identified a need for safety improvements at the intersection as there had been nine recorded crashes in the five year period between 2001 and 2005, two of which involved minor injuries. A crash record like this is typical for high volume intersections without formal right-turning facilities so the upgrade will provide right turn bays for traffic turning into Bill Hercock Street and Trinity Crescent.
In addition to the turning bays the opportunity is being taken to include cycle lanes through the intersection area and this means that bus stops on Kennedy Road near Trinity Crescent need to be relocated. The Napier-bound stop will be moved southwards towards the plantation reserve drain and the Taradale-bound stop will be moved closer to the expressway. The Kennedy Road cycle lanes will be further extended in conjunction with a reseal in the coming summer season.
The intersection work is expected to take four weeks and it should be completed by the end of July.
