In Napier's Botanical Gardens and planted some 60 years ago, this evergreen tree is a species that originates in southern China. It has attractive
dappled orange-brown bark and glossy, dark green leaves.
The flowers are up to 10cms across with white wavy-edged petals and a prominent clump of golden stamens.
