What is Settlement Support New Zealand?

Settlement Support New Zealand is a nationwide initiative with 19 locations around New Zealand.

It is for new settlers coming to live in New Zealand. People can contact the local coordinator and access our website for local information before and when they arrive in New Zealand. Your local Settlement Support office can assist you in accessing information and services to assist you in settling in to the Hawke's Bay.

The local coordinator is also responsible for bringing together agencies to resolve localised gaps in services at a quarterly forum and with regular meetings with the Settlement Steering Group. The Steering Group is made up of representatives from:

  • Housing New Zealand
  • ESOL Home Tutors
  • Ministry of Social Development
  • Hawke's Bay District Health Board
  • Hastings District Council
  • Hastings District Library
  • Career Services
  • New Zealand Police
  • New Zealand Red Cross
  • Community representative
  • Department of Internal Affairs

The New Zealand Settlement Strategy plays an important role in helping newcomers settle better in New Zealand. Its aim is to ensure that New Zealand is a welcoming destination for newcomers.

There are many challenges to positive settlement outcomes and the New Zealand Settlement Strategy works across multiple government agencies to address the many issues of settlement.

As a result of our Settlement Strategy, newcomers to New Zealand can:

  • feel welcomed, accepted, and respected
  • obtain employment appropriate to their skills
  • be supported to confidently communicate in English
  • access information and responsive services
  • maintain their cultural identities
  • feel safe
  • accept, respect, and contribute to the New Zealand way of life.
